Quillin-Truax bout ends in no-decision after gash

Boxing

The 12-round super middleweight bout between Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin and “Golden” Caleb Truax ended in a no-decision at the end of the second round on Saturday after an accidental head-butt opened a deep gash between Truax’s right eye and nose.

The ringside doctor ruled that the cut was down to the bony tissue and the blood was dripping into Truax’s eye, obscuring his vision. The end was a disappointment for the boxers and the large crowd at the Minneapolis Armory.

The bout was an IBF eliminator, with the winner to get a shot at titleholder Caleb Plant, who was ringside to scout his next challenger.

Brooklyn’s Quillin (34-1-1, 1 ND, 23 KOs) said he is willing to have a rematch. Both Truax (30-4-2, 1 ND, 19 KOs) of nearby Osseo, Minnesota, and Quillin are former titleholders — Truax at super middleweight and Quillin at middleweight.

Derevyanchenko wins by unanimous decision over Culcay

In an IBF middleweight eliminator, Sergiy Derevyanchenko, a Ukrainian based in Brooklyn, won a 12-round unanimous decision over Jack Culcay by the scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112.

Derevyanchenko, 33, was busier throughout the bout, especially with body punches. But Culcay, an Ecuadorian fighting out of Davie, Florida, rocked him with an uppercut in the fifth round and staggered him in the 10th with a right to the head.

The 33-year-old Culcay (25-4, 13 KOs) appeared to run out of gas in the final round, and Derevyanchenko (13-1, 10 KOs) rallied to have his most productive round of the match.
