Some fierce West Indies bowling has snuffed out the partnership that had anchored England and dismissed the tourists for a first-innings 277 on day two of the third and final Test in St Lucia. In reply at lunch, West Indies are 2 for 0.

In a highly entertaining session, Shannon Gabriel made the early breakthrough to dismiss Jos Buttler, who did not add to his overnight score of 67, while Kemar Roach claimed four wickets as England lost 6 for 45 in another mini-collapse.

Ben Stokes and Buttler had put on a 124-run fifth-wicket stand on the first day after England had slumped to 107 for 4. But they managed to add just one run in the midst of some genuine pace from Gabriel, who struck in the third over of the day with a 146kph gem that clattered into Buttler’s stumps.

Jonny Bairstow endured a torrid time a the crease, not least when he was struck on the grill of his helmet as he bent back to dodge a 150kph Gabriel delivery. He was unscathed, but the same could not be said when he was stuck three times in the groin during the course of his innings, which produced just two runs off 33 deliveries. Gabriel dropped Bairstow off his own bowling before Bairstow was bowled, the second victim of Roach after Stokes.

Stokes added 17 runs to his overnight score to reach 79 before he got a top edge on a Roach delivery with wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich running out to square leg to take a magnificent diving catch at full stretch.

Alzarri Joseph chimed in with the wicket of Moeen Ali, caught by Darren Bravo at first slip for 13 before Roach cleaned up the tail.
